WORKED EXAMPLE

One building, four lifts, three cables: a worked example

A 20-floor tower, three passenger lifts with IP cameras, one goods lift with an HD camera, and an emergency phone in each. What to order, with the sums shown.

Guides give rules; a worked example shows them in use. Here is an imaginary building and the ordering list that comes out of it. The numbers come from the same formulas as the calculator.

The building

A residential tower with 20 floors at about 3 m a floor, so 60 m of lift travel. Four lifts: A, B and C are passenger lifts with new IP cameras; D is the goods lift, which already has an HD (DVR) camera. Every lift has an emergency phone.

A 20-floor tower with four lifts, showing the cable for each: CC-8251G-90 for lifts A, B and C, CC-9511K-90 for lift D, and CC-4251G-90 for the intercom in all four.
The tower, the cable on each lift and what to order. Illustration; the cable loops are drawn for effect.

Step 1: pick the cable for each job

  • Lifts A, B, C, IP camera in the cabin: CC-8251G-90, CAT6 Flat 4 Pair.
  • Lift D, HD camera: CC-9511K-90, 2+2 Flat, because the camera is HD-TVI, AHD, HD-CVI or analog and connects to a DVR.
  • Emergency phones, all four lifts: CC-4251G-90, CAT6 Flat 2 Pair, on its own cable so a camera fault never takes out the intercom.

Step 2: work out the loop

The cables hang from a bracket at mid-height, so the loop is about travel ÷ 2 + 3 m: 60 ÷ 2 + 3 = 33 m per lift. That is well under the 60 m recommended for an IP camera on PoE, so CC-8251G-90 is the right choice rather than the GI-rope version, which is for taller or heavier-duty lift wells.

Step 3: add slack and count the length

  • IP cameras, three lifts: 3 × 33 m + 10 % = 109 m.
  • HD camera, one lift: 33 m + 10 % = 37 m.
  • Intercoms, four lifts: 4 × 33 m + 10 % = 146 m.

Step 4: turn lengths into coils

The cable is supplied as a 180 m continuous coil, and each lift is cut from the coil as one piece, so the moving loop has no joint. If you need only 90 m, the coil is cut in the middle.

CableLength neededOrder
CC-8251G-90 (IP cameras, lifts A to C)109 mOne 180 m coil
CC-9511K-90 (HD camera, lift D)37 m90 m, cut from a coil
CC-4251G-90 (intercoms, all four lifts)146 mOne 180 m coil

What is not on the list

The fixed section, from each junction box to the NVR, is ordinary round CAT6 and is measured separately. The lift companies fix everything in the lift well on their own safety procedure, with the installer present. And when the job is done, the part codes and fixing points go on each lift's maintenance card; the acceptance test sheet and handover checklist are there for that.

Your own building will have different numbers. Put them into the chooser and it writes the WhatsApp message for you.

QUESTIONS

Questions this post answers

How much cable do I need for four lifts of 60 m travel?

About 37 m per lift fixed at mid-height (60 ÷ 2 + 3 m, plus 10 % slack), so 146 m for four lifts: one 180 m coil, with the offcut left over.
