LEARN

Everything we know about lift camera cabling.

Written by the people who make the cable, for the people who fit it and the people who pay for it. Guides are the reference shelf. Stories are shorter and about real jobs. Datasheets and printables are at the bottom.

WORDS WE USE

A short glossary of lift words

The same thing has two or three names on site. This is what we call each, and what else you may hear.

Lift well
The vertical space the lift moves in. Also called the lift shaft. We say lift well on this site.
Cabin
The part of the lift people ride in. Also called the car. The camera and intercom are in the cabin.
Cabin top
The roof of the cabin, where the technician stands and where the travelling cable is clamped on the cabin side.
Pit
The space below the bottom floor. The cable loop must never touch the pit floor.
Machine room
Where the lift motor and controller are, usually at the top. The camera cable starts or ends near here.
Flat elevator cable
A cable made flat so it hangs and flexes in a lift well. Ours carry the camera (IP or HD) and the intercom, so they are more than the lift's own travelling cable.
Travelling cable
Any cable that moves with the cabin. Also called trailing cable or flexible lift cable. The lift's own cable is one; the camera cable hangs beside it.
G+12
Ground plus 12 floors above it. Use it to count the floors the lift serves.
Loop
The hanging U of cable between the fixing bracket in the lift well and the cabin. It folds and unfolds on every trip.
FRLS
Flame retardant, low smoke. The jacket material class used for lift cables.
GI rope
Galvanised steel rope moulded into the cable to carry its weight in tall lift wells.
PoE
Power over Ethernet. An IP camera gets its power from the same cable that carries the picture.
NVR / DVR
The recorder. NVR takes IP cameras on RJ45. DVR takes HD / analog cameras on BNC.
