HD or analog camera in a lift

HD-TVI, AHD, HD-CVI and older analog cameras send video on a coaxial core and take 12 V DC from a separate supply. In a lift shaft that means two things must travel with the car — video and power — and taping a coax to a power wire is exactly the arrangement that fails. The 2+2 Flat puts both in one flat, flexible FRLS jacket.

THE ANSWER2+2 Flat HD camera lift cable — CC-9511K-902+2 Flat HD camera lift cableCC-9511K-90 · 90 m coil pairs

HD / analog camera: video + 12 V DC in one cable.

The cable

Use CC-9511K-90, the 2+2 Flat. It carries two multi-strand tinned-copper video cores with LDPE insulation and two multi-strand copper power cores in a black flexible FRLS PVC flat jacket. Two video cores give you a spare or a second camera in the car; two power cores carry the 12 V DC. Supplied in 90 m coil pairs.

Video distance

HD-over-coax formats run hundreds of metres on good coax; the travelling loop in a lift is far shorter than that, so the video core is never the limit. What matters is joint quality — use compression BNCs, not twist-on, because the car vibrates and twist-on connectors walk loose.

Power

Voltage drop on the 12 V pair is the thing to calculate. If the supply is in the machine room, the current flows down one core and back up the other, so the effective length is twice the cable length. For an IR camera drawing 0.5–1 A, keep the drop under 10 % or power the camera from a supply on the car controller and use the power cores only for the short hop. The Fix guide on flicker covers the symptoms of getting this wrong.

When to choose IP instead

If the building is moving to an NVR, or the lift camera is the only analog camera left, it is worth putting in the CAT6 Flat 4 Pair now and an IP camera in the car. The cable is the part that is hard to replace later; the camera is easy.

QUESTIONS

HD or analog camera in a lift — questions

Which cable for an HD CCTV camera in a lift?

Channeltech CC-9511K-90, the 2+2 Flat lift cable — two tinned-copper video cores and two copper power cores in one flat FRLS jacket, in 90 m coil pairs.

Can I use 3+1 CCTV cable in a lift?

Round 3+1 cable is built for fixed runs, not for continuous flexing. It will work for a while and then fail at the flex point. The 2+2 Flat is the travelling-cable version of the same idea.

Why is the lift camera picture rolling or flickering?

Almost always voltage drop on the power pair, or a loose BNC. See the guide "Lift camera video flickers or drops when the lift moves".
