A clause that buys a travelling cable, not the cheapest round cable.
A one-line clause such as "CAT6 cable suitable for lift use" can be met with ordinary round CAT6, which is not a travelling cable. A good clause covers these parts, in this order:
- Type and purpose. A flat, flexible travelling cable (elevator cable) for CCTV or intercom in lifts.
- Conductor. Stranded, with the strand count and size (for the 4-pair cable, 24 AWG, 7/0.195 mm). Never write the AWG alone.
- Pairs and insulation. Each pair in its own flexible sheath.
- Outer sheath and profile. Flexible FRLS PVC and the profile in millimetres, which is easy to check on delivery.
- Electrical values. Impedance, conductor resistance, mutual capacitance and delay skew from the datasheet.
- Bend radius and temperature. Ask the supplier to state the minimum bend radius from the datasheet.
- Fire. The test the cable was actually tested to. Do not ask for a classification the cable does not have.
- Supply. A continuous length per lift with no joint in the moving part, and the manufacturer and part code printed on the jacket.
The full ten-part version with the reasons is in Writing the lift camera cable clause in a tender. For choosing the cable first, see the complete guide to elevator CCTV cable.

Tender specification questions
What should a tender clause for lift camera cable say?
Name the application (a flat flexible travelling cable for lifts), stranded conductors with strand count and size, the sheath material and profile, the electrical values, the fire test, the standards and the documents to be supplied. "CAT6 cable suitable for lift" is not enough: round CAT6 meets it and is not a travelling cable.
Can I copy the specification text from this page?
Yes. Each paragraph on this page has a copy button and is written to be pasted into a tender, BOQ or compliance statement. Check it against your own project requirements before you issue it.
What does "or approved equivalent" mean for lift cable?
Define equivalence by the construction and the measured values (flat profile, stranded conductors, FRLS sheath, impedance, resistance, bend radius), not by the brand name, and ask the bidder for a point-by-point compliance statement.
Which documents can Channeltech supply for a tender?
The technical datasheet, a manufacturer authorisation letter, a point-by-point compliance statement against your specification, the ISO 9001 certificate and batch test reports, issued per project.
